Reflecting on this Memorial Day

Greetings Everyday Spy,

My travels up and down the East Coast over the last six months have humbled me.

Life can be hard on the road, and even harder when you aren’t sure of your next destination. But for all the challenges travel has presented me, I’ve always come through safe on the other side.

For more than 1.1 million Americans who have died in service to our great Nation, their travel has come to an end.

I was privileged to wear a military uniform from 1999-2007. I served around the world and met people that would become life-long friends. We were soldiers. We were family.

We served with pride and worked hard to bring honor to our loved ones and to one an other. We were always prepared to give our life in service, but planned to raise families, build careers and lead meaningful lives.

Today I look at my life and what I’ve done to serve the American people, my family, and my community. But rather than celebrate what I’ve accomplished, I reflect on what others before me have sacrificed to give me the freedom to live my life.

The friends, family, and faceless heroes of history whose service is still felt long after their death.

Americans will always fight and die for what is right. Brave men and women will forever put themselves in harm’s way to keep you and I safe.

On this Memorial Day I ask you to join me in remembering that it was everyday people who gave up life’s simple freedoms – even the freedom of life itself – so that you and I can live, laugh, and learn from them.

Godspeed, #EverydaySpy
